I figure I’ll document my build here.

I bought my Roxor from a dealer that was no longer going to cease being a Roxor dealer and just wanted to liquidate their current inventory. The dealer knew that I was interested in them but I certainly was not expecting the call with a price I couldn’t refuse. I impulse bought their last model in stock. A 2018 Black LE #168.

The sales guy asked where my trailer was to pick it up....I said I’m driving it home! He replied once you sign these papers you can do what ever you want. So that’s exactly what I did.

I got home and parked it with the collection. Got out my lawn chair and stared at it, wondering where I’ll go with this project.

A little background.

I’m an avid enthusiast and has been involved in the off-road world for a long time. It’s a family thing, Dad was the same way. I’ve had many rigs over the years and learned what I like and don’t like, every build gets a little better. This Roxor is a fresh start, a blank canvas.

After thinking about it long and hard I decided I’ll let my beloved Samurai go to free up some funds for the Roxor. I had countless hours building the samurai. It was bone stock when I purchased it and you could count the “store bought” parts on one hand. All home made work done right in my gravel driveway. It hurt to let it go but I was getting excited about building the Roxor.

I threw some lift shackles on on the Roxor, threw the sway bar in the trash, and slapped the wheels and tires I had from the samurai on and went out to test the thing out.

I quickly found that with the sway bar off and the extra long shackles, the front brake lines where pretty short. Without the sway bar I was super worried about over extending them at full flex.

Much to my surprise I did end up breaking both brake lines not from down travel but from up travel. The knuckles came up and hit them after a few hard flexes and full speed runs through the fields.

I started calling every parts store looking for AN brake lines. I had no luck so I drove to a generic parts store and asked to go in the back and look through their inventory till I found something that worked. I ended up with rear brake hoses to a 2003 Honda Accord and new hard lines to get rid of the AN fittings. Installed without issue and back out on the trail.

I did notice the steer stop needed adjusted from the factory. It would allow the caliper to hit the shocks on the flexy trails.

I really fell in love with the Roxor but still didn’t know what direction I wanted to take the build in. I loved how it was stock with just a set of cheap shackles and 33 tires but I knew it wouldn’t get me down the trails I wanted to take it down.

I figured I’d keep it pretty much the way it was for a while and start collecting parts. In the mean time I bought some fresh Maxxis 33x10.5r15 and a set of Bart 15x8 wheels with 3 inch back spacing. I welded some custom cut bead lock rings that I had made to look like my favorite spiderlock wheels. At this point I also added a skid plate from Rick Cecco and a cheap Cj7 rear seat from smitty bilt. I figured that would be enough to have fun with while I started gathering parts for the real build out.

Only took 1 or 2 more tail rides to find out that I definitely needed some rock sliders to protect the rockers. I really wanted as much protection as posable so I welded up some tube sliders straight to the frame with plenty of kick out to keep the rocks and trees away.

While having fun with the Roxor, in the background the parts collection was starting. After contemplating building the Factory Roxor axles I decided to ditch them all together.

This Roxor is going to be built tough with Toyota stuff!

There is nothing wrong with the roxor axles but when it came down to the dollars and cents the Toyota’s just played out to be the best option. Much stronger, easy to high steer, parts are everywhere, and i love removable 3rd member differentials. I also wanted to go wider and wheel spacers and offset wheels KILL ball joints, wheel bearings and steering components.

I decided to use FJ80 Differentials with the factory electronic lockers. I loaded them with Yukon 5.29 gears and Timken bearings. The front is a high pinion to help with the anticipated drive line angles.

Right now somewhere in California, Trailgear is welding together some custom axle housing to stick my built differentials into. I decided to go with the Rock assault housings because they are frickn cool!

“ The axle tubes have been offset above the housing centerline, so the inner axles ride near the bottom of the axle tubes rather than in the center. The result is an increase of 3/8" in ground clearance under the axle tubes. The axle tubes are made from 5/16" thick 1020 DOM tubing with an outer diameter of 3".

The heavy-duty, press formed, 1/4" plate steel center section is shaved to give you 3/4" of additional ground clearance under the differential. The differential mounting surface is made from 1/2" plate steel to ensure studs can not pull out, even under heavy loads. Our housings are precision alignment checked using start-of-the-art, 3D digital imaging equipment to ensure that all Rock Assault Axle Housings are 100% straight and true.”

Because I want to keep this a small tire rig on 35 or 37s maximizing ground clearance in key. These housings have a lot of features to gain the maximum amount of clearance. Of course I could do some HUMVEE portal ends like Jesse Hanies but I don’t have that kind of money.

Love it..once you are at a stage when you are satisfied with your project would.love to hear about how.kuch you invested in terms of time, labor and parts. The scary thing of customization for newbies is the investment and that would help everyone.

Giving myself a budget of $6K not including wheels and tires. Any money made off of selling the stock roxor parts will be added to the Roxor fund as well. I like setting time goals so I went ahead and booked a house rental in Moab UT for the week of labor day 2020, now its got to be done by then.

Now I need to decide on a tire. It will either be Maxxis Treps or TSL SX2 ...

Do you trailer the Rox to trail head or drive em? If so, how far? The ones on the right seem pretty gnarly for pavement. Look bad ass thought lol

She is certainly a trailer queen. No real desire to drive it on the road. That only leads to trouble.

How much are those Toyota axles? Will they be offset to match the roxor axles?
