Been a while since I have built anything for my roxor but today I started somthing I’ve been thinking about since I started moving towards aluminum armor.

I went and picked up a 1x3 of solid aluminum bar expecting to break the bank. To my surprise aluminum was cheaper then steel. A 12 foot bar was only $140!

Now what could I be up too?

I got a set of aluminum rocker guards from Cecco Racing and, while they are pretty stout by them selves, I knew I’d want a little more strength for the abuse my roxor seems to endure. The tube sliders I made originally are dented pretty bad and that’s with .250 wall DOM. So if these things are going to last some serious strength was going to need to be added.

See where I’m going with this?

After cutting the old sliders off I realized how important they were not just as a slider but also a step. With the door bars on my cage the door is just about useless for anything other then a access panel to get under the dash.
A step is pretty nice to have for climbing in and out on club trail days but would get caught up on everything on hard wheeling days.

After sitting back and staring at it for a while I came up with an idea to add a removable step into the thick plate I was adding to the side of the Cecco pans.

After an hour of chips flying all over the shop, here is what I came up with.

The step should be able to take a far amount of abuse but it can also be removed completely. A couple counter sunk bolts and some skateboard grip tape and I’ll be set.

Now I need to start brainstorming what to do underneath.

@Max A. : what kind of structural reinforcement do you have behind the aluminum to connect it to the frame?

Glad to see your latest build.

I’ve got some ideas. It definitely needs to take a beating without doing any damage to the body.

What grade aluminum bar did you get? Hope its at least 6061 because 5052 is really soft. 2024 will hold up better and 7075 is just as hard as steel but costs an arm and a leg and corrodes faster than the fore mentioned grades. Make them bolts big ones! Where you drive and how you drive, those ARE GOING to take a beating. I love the look but they will get tore up! By tore up I mean, scrapes and dents and gouges. That aluminum bar will be coming off in shavings against hard rock just like your end mill did to it. Won't be pretty for long. Don't go wiping your hand along the bottom outboard edge either or you will be wearing band aids for a week. Over kill it and attach a few braces to the chassis.

6061 of course! And yes using aluminum in such a high impact area will have its issues. But worry not, I’ve got a plan .

Max, I KNOW you will have SOMETHING different! Lolol. You are very creative and resourceful.

From your earlier post on material costs, it is CRAZY what price swings there are in materials n ow. Its this crazy country of ours letting manufacturing raw materials as well as all types of manufacturing slip away.

When we built parts for many customers they had a list of manufacturing countries allowed for their raw material. I think its called DFARS. To many 3rd world and super power countries have very low production standards and inspections. If we were building parts for a customer who didn't mind say a China made steel we could save them as much as 60% on material cost. I do NOT know why steel has cought up with Aluminum in cost other than more countries are producing more Aluminum.

I know in the year and 2 months building my car, if I built it today parts and materials would cost me $10,000 more than I spent!

Looking great as usual. Your engineering skills are impressive!!! Looking forward to KOH23 and I'm hoping to attend, as a spectator. Have you considered using HDPE as a skid plate cover? It holds up pretty well and is slick over the rocks. Just a thought.

Great minds think alike! I already picked up a 4x8 sheet of UHMW (holds up a little better then HDPE) 1 inch thick. Going to plate from the rocker to the frame for a nice slick surface.

Checking in… some things in my life have changed…

Bought a new house with a bigger shop!

But more importantly I’m returning to King of the Hammers this February!

So as of right now I’m ditching the aluminum sliders and will revisit that later. It’s race prep time!

Congrats on all my friend. Can't wait to see the roxor ready to race. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Do you still have your FC150

Hammers prep is fully underway. Parts are arriving daily. This time it’s a little easier knowing exactly what to expect.

Since I’ve actually had to change or service very little in the past 2 years since the last hammers I’m not going to do any drastic changes. Im a strong believer in don’t fix thing that aren’t broken.

Im really focusing on checking over everything and spending time and money on the little details that were either overlooked or we just plane out ran out of time for last round. There are a lot of accessories that I wish I would have had like storage for parts and tools, more light, easier to reach controls and navigation, etc.

I wanted to build a new set of HD rear shackles. The last set held up fine but I wanted to take it to the next level for peace of mind.

I found some old rusty tubing in my scrap pile and cleaned it up. Cut some 1/4 inch flat plate shackles on the plasma table to the same dimensions as the long travel kit and then added the tube to reinforce them. I split the tube and welded them to the shackles to both protect the bolt heads and also add a good bit of strength.
