SCOOP: Updated Thar by 2020

Next-gen Mahindra Thar coming - Team-BHP

New, BIGGER Mahindra Thar Spied For The First Time, likely to debut at the 2020 Auto EXPO.

Possibilities of the new Thar,

The BIGGER part scares me. Hope it won't be a Wranglery debacle.

- New-gen Thar could make its debut at Auto Expo 2020

-Likely to be based on a new platform, new Thar should conform with future safety norms

- Likely to retain Jeep CJ5-inspired styling

- Looks significantly wider than the outgoing Thar

-Will get BSVI-compliant diesel engine and with more safety features

- Daily usability is expected to improve with improved seats and additional goodies

- Will continue to rival the Force Gurkha as Maruti is unlikely to bring the new Jimny anytime soon

This might be the chassis on which the new Thar be built. It's a hybrid layout with transverse engine placement which was introduced in the Marazzo.

Looking to buy
Looks Like it needs a B-Pillar which is a Bolt on, the doors and Hard top kit for Thar will easily fit a Roxor.

More on the next-gen Thar. Seems like Mahindra going the FCA way, bloating up the one good model they got. And the new one seems coil sprung all around(. I'm not sure if they also release a solid axle-leaf sprung version anymore. Hold on to your Roxors like crazy. And keep massaging your friendly neighborhood MANA to keep chugging out the Roxors in the exact same ole-school form as they do now.

Ps: do note it's a test mule only, final one should be 'nicer'. Do remember, this or nothing. They could've shut down the whole jeep line citing regulations and the not so high domestic sales. This almost happened once around 2010. I'm glad and surprised they didn't this time either.

It very much looks like there are still prototyping the vehicle, but have the suspension far enough along to road test it, so the IFS/IRS are prolly here to stay. MM did two flavors of Thar, right?

The body just seems too darn wide. They are prolly trying to push the chassis into a smaller 6 passenger, with some more creature comforts. That isn't gonna foster much love from the fans of the brand's roots.

Not much love from me for sure. But it had to be done. Indian crash and emissions getting tighter in an year so this happened. It's not really a stretched old chassis, it's a different platform altogether. Either the marazzo or scorpio. Yeah MM got two Thar flavors currently, hope the trend continues. Theres a rural segment the Thar serves so MM should be keeping a solid axle version for them. God knows what the 2020 looks like when done though. Fingers crossed.

It wouldn't be a big deal if they moved the Thar up into a different segment so they can bring back more of an updated bare-bones Major type rig. IMO that'd be super cool. I don't think that'd bother too many people. Same deal with Jeep here stateside. They keep bloating the bottom end of the ultra-capable ute segment to where they don't even resemble the vehicles that got them here.

Wheelbases: 80" died in the early 60s, 81" died in the early 70s, 84" died in the early 80s, 93" died in the mid 2000s. The JL is now ~97 inches..

Now the ultra-capable compact segment is twice as heavy, > 20% longer than they used to be, and lack nearly all farm/rural/ag utility they once had. This is not progress. Obviously there is a very profitable segment catering to urban weekend warriors, but don't completely ditch the utility-focused consumers that got you here. I wish Jeep would had offered a strippo trim at least. IMO the Willys Edition was that opportunity, but instead they just did Willys flavored badging..

It seems odd that MM, who is taking full advantage of the watering down of the Jeep brand, doesn't see they are "JK'ing" the Thar lol

Cannot confirm the veracity of the following quote but there's a chance this test mule is deceptive. But I highly doubt some of the parts like the widened tailgate. tub, windshield, hood & grille exist in Mahindra parts bin. Maybe they invested a bit to confuse us!

According to my contacts, the Thar test-mule is just a chassis calibration mule for the upcoming Scorpio and other Mahindra products including the Thar which is still some time away.

It actually is the latest-gen Scorpio's Magna-built chassis that has seen further tweaking for future products. The body is just a mix and match and nothing that will make it to production.

Thar is destined to go the Wrangler way. If not the crash norms, they've to cater to the mass anyway. It's a lifestyle vehicle more than an off-roader.

There's only one pure off-roader in the Indian market today: the Gurkha. If you really want the Indian successor to Willys, it's infact the Bolero (and Scorpio to an extent).

What are you even saying brother? Current bolero got IFS, how's that in any way an old Willys successor? The new gen bolero be out 2020 with radical changes. And the Scorpio has a vastly different chassis and power train and rides like a boat. If at all any true successor to the Willys, it would be the Thar MDI(roxor platform). Even the thar crde with IFS doesn't count. And all these will be even more sissyfied going forward.
