There is another company india which kind of have similar licenses with mercedes. Force motors, it's a decent company not as reputable as mahindra but this company does produce engines and drive trains for merc diesel vehicles.
They have come up with a decent offroad vehicle based on G Wagon platform, boasting 140 hp engine but almost at half the price around usd 20k. It's for sure more capable than a thar.

Looks like a nice rig and the price is VERY fair. I really wish we had access to these in the US. Instead for forced to buy plastic HEEP's or go underground.
