Improved Half Doors

The tops have been going back on my local Jeeps. I have seen three of the old YJ Jeeps with Cloth Tops and Half Doors.

The YJ Half Doors have a removable upper section with Rods that drop into pockets on the doors. The Cloth upper section has a zip open plastic window. They have a Seal around the edge to tighten it up. I see no reason that someone making Roxor Half Doors, cannot make the Window Section happen. That would be a very good option for all of us who already own a Top and Windshield. I have a Fortress Top and Windshield as well as a Hard Cab Rear Bulkhead. All I need to close it in are Doors. Half Doors with a Removable Top Section would be a good way to make this happen.

I took a much closer look at the Upper Door section on a YJ with Half Doors Friday. The Upper Add on Section has a 3/8" Rod Frame. On the bottom of this frame work are Three 3/8 Rod Pegs that drop into holes in the Lower Door. The frame has Canvas sewn to it with a Plastic Zipper window. A rubber seal is also added to the canvas around the upper edges. Replacement Jeep YJ Upper Half Doors are available from Best Top who makes the Jeep Factory Cloth Tops.

I would think with Half Doors installed on the Roxor a pattern could be constructed from Cardboard first. Cut the Cardboard pattern back 3/8" all around. This pattern could then be transferred to Plywood. With a Rigid plywood pattern the 3/8" Rod Stock could be heated and bent to shape around the plywood Form. With a little Forming and Welding we would have an upper Door Frame for the Roxor Half Doors. At that point all that would remain is getting the Canvas sewn to the Door Frame.

The best case scenario would be for someone making Quality Roxor Half Doors with a better than average Latch to take this project on. Make the Half Doors with Sockets for the Upper Section Rods to drop into. This would provide the customer with a Half Door with an Upper Window section that could be ordered together or separate. This would provide the Customer with a Half Door for nice weather, and an upper section that can be installed for Rain or Cold Weather. I would like the two piece door much better than a one piece hard door.

I took a few minutes to review the available Half Doors commercially available.
Pretty much every one has a slam latch activated on the inside only. Not a one that I looked at had an exterior Operated door latch. That would need addressed.

We might also need a filler to go between the Back of the door opening and the Roll Bar to close the hole in a little. That would keep the upper part of the door above the lower Half Door.

What I probably should do is try and locate a set of YJ Half Door "Canvas Upper Section's" that I can borrow, and first check the fit on the Roxor Door Opening. It might be simpler to use the Best Top Canvas Upper for a YJ Jeep, and make the Half Door, and Trim around the Back of the Door Opening, and around the Top of the Roll Bar fit the Best Top Upper that is available for order. ($500) Fabricating a lower Half Door to fit the Best Top Upper Half would probably be simpler than getting a special Canvas Upper Half fabricated just for the Roxor.
I believe I would like the Half Door with removable Canvas Upper better than a Full Door. On those It Might Rain Days you could take the Door Upper Sections along, and install them if needed to weatherproof the Cab.

I located a basically junk (Badly Rusted Out) YJ with half doors, and the Canvas upper door closures.
I now have in my possession the Drivers side upper closure to work with. Now to see what it will take to make this work.

someone did this already and posted pics on the forum, I can't try to find it as it is somewhere deep within the forum somewhere. It definitely required some modifications, but has worked
