I have not had this issue with my Roxor. I was a valve train tech for a camshaft company, and it just sounds like you may have a lifter bleeding down. I am not sure if the Mahindra lifters are anti-bleed. Or, you may have grit in that one lifter. If it is grit, after a couple oil changes it will probably go away.

should i be worried about messing up the cam? I was doing some looking and the 6.7 Cummins does this too and it will grind a flat spot on the cam. thanks for your help.

It should only last a few seconds. If it goes longer then yes, you will want to change it out. Mahindra is not very helpful on their specs, but I will see if they are anti-bleed lifters.

The Roxor may have solid tappets in it.

I wonder how the drain back works on the oil filter. Could it be bad and everything has to prime before it gets oil and the noise stops?

Hey Rookie4x4, if you are idling does the ticking go away on its own or after you apply power?

If it is after you apply power, it could be a lifter or cam lobe issue. Once the rpms go up the lifter will rise on the cam lobe so that could also be why it quiets down. You could have spalling on the bottom of the lifter and/or the opening ramp of the cam lobe. As RPMs go up, the point of contact between the cam lobe and the lifter moves out on the face of the lifter as well as the lobe. And the lifter spins faster on the cam lobe.

I have not opened my valve train system or needed any work to know whether they are solid or hydraulic tappets (lifters).

TxRoadKill, I believe the oil filters are anti-drain back. If the lifters are solid that could be the issue. Technically, if it was the filter and they are solid tappets, then the noise would usually be from more than one tappet.

My 24 does the same thing. I figure it is braking in and if you listen to all the noises a diesel makes it will drive you mad.

Mine goes away when the oil pressure light goes out.

The eng has solid lifters but what is wierd is it only does it on the first start up.

Dohat, is your oil filter a Mahindra or aftermarket? Maybe TXRoadKill has a point. I asked Mahindra for specs, but I have not heard back from them.

Maybe an Anti-Drain back filter would be the answer.

It is a mahindra and I thought about that so I took the filter off to check it and it had oil in it and the reason I checked it is because no matter when you start it up weather warmed up or the first start up it takes a few seconds for the oil pressure light to go out.

Actually, I believe that the Mahindra oil filter is not an Anti-Drain back, because when I did my first oil change, the Roxor sat for a few days and when I pulled the filter it looked dry as a bone. I thought I had an oil flow issue.

Mine started at around 700 to 800 miles? I have a little over 1000 on it.

I just received this e-mail from Mahindra regarding the oil filter and lifters for the Roxor.

"Hello,

Thank you for contacting MAgNA. The Roxor oil filter does not have anti-drain back valve. Additionally the lifters are hydraulic type without anti bleed feature.

Sincerely"

I put the lettering in bold.

i Looked up the wix51324 and it has an anti drain back valve on it. Seems an easy and cheap fix to try. I bet it will either stop or significantly decrease the time that you hear the noise.

Morning all, last night I put a napa 1324 oil filter on and started her up to fill the filter and let it set over night. I just went out and started it up and no change the oil light went out a little quicker but that was because the napa filter is a little smaller. I tested the mahindra oil filter last year with a napa 1324 and how I did it I got a m20x1.5 drain plug and put oil in both filter and screwed the plug in each one and turned them upside down and the mahindra filter and the napa filter held oil so the black mahindra filter has a anti drain back valve. When I went out and started her up this morning and shut it off I restarted it and the oil light took the same amount of time to go out on restart. Sorry for the long post.

Hydraulic lifter bleed off is completely normal, and a little tick after start-up is common and no cause for concern.

What problem are we trying to address here?
