07/21/2022 UPDATE:

Man the freaking heat here. I haven't got a lot done because I can only work about 3 hours a day on the car before the heat runs me out of the building.

I have started doing some of the body work that is needed before I try to do my turbo Rust-Oleum paint job. There was a gap on both sides of the car where the rear quarter panel meets the lower rocker panel. Since both of these rear quarter panels appear to have been replaced at some point, I assume that's why this work was pretty damn shawty.

i tried to clean all the crap that I could from the seam, this included some old seam fill or Bondo that had flaked out. The gap was as wide as an 1/8" in some spots. I scraped and cleaned and even ran some 80 grit sandpaper up in this gap between the body panel to try and prep it to hold some bondo.

I bondod them up and smoothed it. I then sanded in somewhat of a radius where they meet so that the original body line would still show.
It looks better. I went back and looked at some old pictures on the internet of 66 mustangs and they all have this seam there but they have a piece of grooved trim that goes from the front wheel well to the rear wheel well and it almost conceals this body seam.

Oh well, mine don't have that seam anymore. I fully expected it to crack out down the road but for now I'm going to paint over what I've done. Fingers crossed.

I also got tired of masking off the openings for the windows every time I sand or paint, so I bought some foam core board and made me some pop in blank offs to keep all the crap out of the car while I'm sanding and painting. Reusable! Lolol.

I also did a little hammer work on the front door edge where it meets the front fender on the passenger side. It had a lump that came very close to gouging the fender every time you open the door. I beat the poop out of it with my body hammers and dies. Just a tad bit of work along the edge and I think that will fit good now.

07/27/2022 UPDATE:

WOW! It's been HOT! So I have only been working about 5 hours a day, well 3 hours and 2 hours sipping water in front of the fan. Lolol.

Got the car ready to paint in the morning. I tell you what, this Rust-Oleum TURBO SPRAY PAINT is WILD! It come out of the can like 3 real spray guns. It pours out!

So to practice, I painted the underside of the hood and trunk lid. Paint works great,! But since the paint come out so heavy, I decided to pre paint the gaps, trunk drip channel, drip rails, along the edge of fender where it transitions into the black engine compartment paint. Sprayed around the windows, anywhere that will keep me from flooding and getting runs with the Turbo.

I still had a little left in me so I sanded down, primed and painted the rear corn caps. May have a Turbo run on one. Oops. While sanding off the old paint on the corner caps, more evidence of it's checkered past of paint and body work. There were grinding or sanding marks the look like they used 20 grit paper or a rasp. Crazy. It's fixed now. Lolol.

I still need to paint the air scoop for the hood and the tail light panel semi gloss black.

I still need to strip, sand ,prime and paint the top side of the trunk and hood. Then I can start assembling the head light assemblies and the rest. Once the hood dried I can remount the scoop. Once the trunk dries I can re install the rear deck spoiler.

More to come.

07/28/2022 UPDATE:

Well, I rolled car outside today after doing a final sand and wipe down. I hosed the ground down and the surrounding area and begin using the Rust-Oleum turbo white 24 oz spray cans of paint. Oh man this stuff is really cool.

I was going good until one of the cans that I used was bad, it had a broken section of the little stems sticking out of the can in the spray nozzle would not affix to the can and it leaked everywhere. So the roof needed a little touching up. So I went and bought a few more cans.

I shook the new can up and did a test spray out to the side and it was working fine and as soon as I went to spray the roof it puked out a bunch of dried looking crap or old dry RTV looking stuff. Damn it!

So I calm down and I brushed off the big chunks and for the most part they didn't stick and wiped it away. I did spray the roof again and it looks like there was a little bit of a texture trying to build between the two layers. Looks like at least a wet sand and buff. Hopefully I don't have to redo the whole damn roof.

Other than that, I got about five bugs a beard hair and a couple of water drops from when I was watering down the cement area around the car and that's it. It tacked up in about 30-40 minutes enough to wear nothing would stick to it and was dry enough to push the car back in the garage by 1:00 p.m. which was about 4 and 1/2 hours after I painted it.

All in all i am extremely happy with the quality that these stupid cans of paint can put out. The only downside is it comes in white or black. I know lots of jokes. Lololol.

I got the top side of the hood stripped and sanded today as well as the trunk lid which was an amazing history of layers of this and that and rust and, yeah, a history. I will shoot them tomorrow morning and I think I will be done with 95% of the painting finally after 10 days of sanding and touching up and priming and sanding and priming and sanding and glazing and priming and sanding. sounds like The wizard of Oz. Lololol.

So here's a few pics of the rough spray before cleaning it up and before pulling all of the masking off. I did pull the masking off the contacting the white paint areas along the black anodized portions of the door and the door handle delete plates.

I will say that the finish is decent. Yes there is some orange peel. Yes the paint goes on very thick. And there's plenty of room for some wet sanding and some buffing. It's not like a completely smooth paint job from one of the local chains that will cost you $3,000 but for 150 bucks and a lot of sweat beer and water and break times I'm not going to *itch. It's not a show car, it's a play car, it's a track car if I ever get any money to do a track day, and a look at me now project. It will never be done. I will always find something that needs to be done I'm sure.

Yes I did!

It took 6 cans for the car, 2 for the hood and trunk lid, both sides, and one for the front head light parts and rings as well as the the rear corner pieces. One can for the rear valance and cross bar in front. I have bought 12 cans total. The first 8 were $12.49 at Home depot. I had one of the 8 fail due to a crack in the spray stem coming out of the can, had a split and have 2 1/2 cans left. So 9 total cans used. The additional 4 I bought had gone up to $15.98 a can in the past two weeks!

I had a few issues on the roof. I had a thin area and ran out. I bought the new cans and the first can I used puewked out some silly string looking crap after I had already made a few passes. So the roof will get wet sanded and buffed. It was an hour after the first spray, the sun was out and the second spray on the roof crazed a little. It settled back down after an hour in the sun but is still blotchy.

All in all, for the $150-160 I have spent on the paint job, for the use the car will see, its a driver not a show car, it looks surprisingly good. And, with all the crappy paint already on the car before I started, all the sanding and striping I did, I did not want to take it to a paint shop, have them tell me $2000 and it wind up being $4000 and having it splotch up and craze due to the crap paint that had been on it. I mean it had 10 layers of paint, primer, body filler, sealer, paint, primer..... It had a hard life, every body panel has been hit, fixed, replaced or left torn up.! Lololo. I am no body man and DO NOT wish to tackle another job like this for at least another 45 years. LOLOLOL.

08/03/2022 UPDATE:

Well it's all back together. It's completely white and black. After getting it back together about 12:30 today, I took it for a drive up the street to take a few pics.

On the 2 mile drive I at least 8 people honk in approval! Lololol. Stopped in front of some sort of church or office and took a few pics. Honk honk honk. Lolol.

So I now know a very important thing about driving this car in the summer sun. YOU NEED DIN GLASSES REALLY BAD! Lololol.

So going to park it in the sun for a week or two so the paint can cure out. I hope it does. I need to do some wet sanding and buffing. It's killing me to not put the BOSS 302 Decals on yet. Needs to be polished first.

08/04/2022 UPDATE:

Well I did some clean up of the white paint over spray that was on the wheels and under carriage.

I was shooting some black rattle can and as always happens, the can craps out. It's half full! Errrrrr. So I wanted to paint the seam below the rocker panels and area below rear fenders. Also wanted to repaint the black around the upper door openings.

So I took that crapped out can of paint out back, pulled out my knife and cautiously pocked a small slit in the can letting out the pressure. I know, I'm crazy but have done this since I was a cheap bastard 10 year old. Lolol.

Once the pressure was out I opened the hole up and poured the black paint into a paint cap. I then brushed the body seams, window surround and whatever else needed touching up.

Then I decided I needed to go ahead and put my BOSS 302 decals on. This was a first for me. Never put on a transfer in my 63 years. Lolol. Went well. I positioned the decal and tapped the top edge to the fender. Then raised it up and peeled the backing, squeegeed it on. Had a few small bubbles but poked them and worked them out.

08/08/2022 UPDATE:

Well, fabricated a close out panel for the front opening of the car. I started out making a paper template then traced and cut out the panel using .040 aluminum. 2 hours later I was still trying to bend two ends and make it fit! Screw this!

So I cut both ends off and made it with three pieces. A left, right and center panel. I roughed it in, drilled, added threaded rivet nuts in cross bar and installed it for fit. After about two more hours I was happy enough to rivet the three panels together and i primed and painted it. I let it dry over night.

i went in this morning and installed it and then touched up the scuffs and scratches in the surrounding areas from my 8 hours of cussing and flailing the day before.

i think I'm am almost done for now. I still need to sand and buff the roof. I bought a roof decal to cover it all up anyway. The decal is a matt black distressed and tattered American Flag. Once that's on, all I have left is to make the decal for the rear wing that says, JAKE 2.0. My dad's nick name that my brother and I had for dad. Only us and a few close friends ever called him that.

Tackled trying to buff up the paint on the roof where I had issues with the spray can puewking out the silly string looking crap.

Wet sanded it with 600 grit and then stuck the $10 buffing wheel from Amazon on the DeWalt drill and used the only thing I had in house as buffing compound, a liquid wax stuff from mothers.

It took me 2.5 hours in 94 degree heat. Whipped my fat ass! It actually came out good. Not great but good. Matches the rest of the car now. Lololol. Gonna try and get the flag wrap on the roof Friday.

Here is a before and after pic.

08/12/2022 UPDATE;

Well all, it's been a fun and challenging build thus far.

As of today, August 12th 2022 I'm going to say that the build is complete except for any further additions to it which I will call accessories. Accessories being pop in windows and anything else similar to that, that which would be an ad on or accessory like we would have done on the Roxors.

So here is some of the final pics I'm going to post on this build. I got the roof decal on this morning and it looks great. So other than that and touching up little things I'm going to say, TA DA, it's a wrap. Now to go drive the piss out of it and show it off.

JUST A FEW MORE PICS.

Well I got the car out for a few runs Friday. Met an old friend who was in town for lunch at Ford's Garage restaurant. Had to take a few more pics.

Then I got a call from the sign place that the JAKE 2.0 decal was ready. So I drove over and they put it on.looks great!

A quick reason for the JAKE 2.0.

Many of you may remember my posts about my dad a few years ago next month on dad's passing at 94 years old.

His name was Nils Jackson Eri......

Everyone that is friends or family and his mother and aunts and uncles always called him JACK. In their karate world the students called him Mr. E.

Dad was in the national guard. He was the Command Sgt Major for the state of Texas under several generals. Dad made many trips to Ft Hood and many times would have a driver.

One time when I was about 10 years old, dad came home from summer camp and told us he had the best driver at Hood this time. The drivers name was Jake. So dad would say, Jake, let's go to the tank range or Jake, takes us to HQ or Jake let's get some lunch. So on and so on.

So my brother and I started calling dad JAKE. Jake, take us to a movie, JAKE, take us to the pool, JAKE , take us to 7-11 for a slurpy. Lololol. So JAKE stuck

So for over 50 years my brother and I, our close friends, my mom, and family friends called Jack JAKE.

So this mustang build in part was done as and is a tribute to that man, "JAKE". His hobby was cars, he grew up with Ed Wilkins who loaned Carrol Shelby his MG100 to race his first race, knew Carrol through Ed, enjoyed sports car club in Dallas for decades.

Jake was the BEST dad anyone could have had. Gentle Giant as he was know by many. Caring, loving, sharing, and strict at times dad.

So here are a few pics of JAKE for JAKE.

way to stick with it! turned out amazing!
Thanks Max!

I know that WE have something in common. We can say I DID THIS! BUILT NOT BOUGHT! Lololol. Its like watching people enjoy my BBQ smoked meats, it gives a simple pleasure. Watching people look over the Mustang and you see the questions on their facial expressions, the raised eye brow or the wide open eye look or the finger and thumb to the lip with their palm on their chin pause thing, its satisfying. Let alone when ya smoke a punk in his tricked out, store bought add on Charger from a light or threw some twisties. Lolol. This car CARVES the corners as well if not better than the wife's last vet did. It was a C7 with every option sept for track brakes, rear end cooler and dry sump oil pan. The vets gone now. MUSTANGS RULE !!! Lololol.

Well I guess I did something right. Put the car in a small 40-50 car muscle car show. Won first place over 4 other mustangs. I'll post the second place cars pic. Guess I did ok on the build. Lololol.
