Have a question about thermostats. Have a coolant temp Guage and it barely moves when driving max 160 in the summer. After driving it and shutting it off the temp Guage climbs to 180 ish. Would this be a faulty thermostat?

No, that is normal. Coolant is not flowing through the radiator anymore and it absorbs residual heat from the engine. If you fired it back up, it would drop almost immediately.

Yes that what it does. Like a little more heat this time of year lol

I thought by you're first post it seemed like you were wondering if it wasn't cooling enough....but if more heat is what you need, there's Some things you can check. If the gauge sender is right on the thermostat housing, it reads the temp of the coolant coming out of the engine. If the thermostat is opening too soon, it will cool the engine more. Thus losing heat to the heater core, if that's the heat you're looking for. These little diesels run pretty cool to start and a lot of wind can cool the engine well without the help of the radiator. Especially if you're still running the belt driven fan. So it depends if the engine just isn't building enough heat, or the thermostat is opening too early cooling off the engine. After a run down the road, check the temp of the radiator with a heat gun. see how hot it is, if the engine just isnt building heat, and the thermostat is doing it's job correctly, the radiator would be pretty cool. Not necessarily "cold" as there is always a slight bit of coolant flow. But if it's in the area of engine temp, then the thermostat is open, cooling the engine. A new T-stat could help dramatically then. This isn't a scientific test by any means, but it would give you an idea.... Hope that helps.... (y)

My coolant temp goes up to 219F, at 70mph, tuned engine, with 35s. Meaning 180s is more than fine, if anything it could stand to be a little hotter past the 180s into the 190s. But you being in 160 is odd, and a concern, either faulty thermostat or faulty temp sensor, more than likely

Looking to buy
Mine runs same temp as yours. Summer in Alaska and running low power. Seems to cool.
i figure it,s just not making much heat.
Fan running all the time does not help.
Was wondering if a higher temp thermostat would help but i don,t think it,s even opening at that low temp.

I'm betting it's the thermostat, when I shut it off the temp Guage goes up to a regular temp. That tells me it's stuck open ?
