Is a stronger battery needed for adding a winch?

Good morning. I just ordered a Cecco front bumper from Diesel Freak. I’m going to be adding a winch to it soon. Looking between 8k-10k lbs. I’ve got a 2024, and the battery is stock. Do I need to upgrade the battery before Install and use the winch. Does anyone have a recommendation for a battery if I do need one? Thanks.

I also am using the stock battery until it quits. No problem so far.
I got my winch mounting plate from Diesel Freak.
I am using a Harbor Freight ZXR 12000# winch converted to synthetic line. I probably should have caught the APEX 12000# Winch on sale. I did not plan on changing out the steel cable to start with, so I went with the ZXR 12000# instead for $250 on a really good sale.

NOTE: The Winch Plate did not mount forward far enough for a Roller Fairlead to overhang the front bumper using the stock holes in the frame. You may need to re-drill all Four Holes, and install washers to clear the Top of the Bumper. Look it all over carefully before mounting the Winch Plate and Winch. The Hawse Fairlead for synthetic line should clear with no issues using the factory holes.
I drilled a couple extra holes and mounted Tow Hooks on the frame rails at the same time that I installed the Winch. I use the Harbor Freight Tow Hooks more than I do the Winch.

NOTE: Installing the Tow Hooks, I could not use the provided Nut Plate, and I had to use Six Nuts with Shoulders to mount the Winch as well as the Tow Hooks. I made up a LONG Box End Wrench by welding two Pawn Shop metric Box End Wrenches together. Heat and take the offset out of the end used to hold the Nuts inside the Frame Rails.

If the rox is running you should be fine, I have a winch that I've used on mine no issues. If you change the battery and you wheel/off-road, IMO optimal is the way to go.

That is a great idea, i did the cheap way of taping the nut to my wrench then just pulling the wrench until the tape broke loose.

A winch with a load on it will draw the stock battery down to 8v. The small alternator cannot keep up with it. When the roxor was equipped with a winch it came with a bigger AGM battery.

Looking at the extra space in the battery tray, I can obviously fit a much larger battery than the one that came in it from the dealership. Can anyone recommend a brand or have a part number? Thanks.

A group 34 battery will fit. So the biggest group 34 in terms of Cranking Amps. I have an X2 in mine but it is mounted under the seat. They have a 68AH group 34 AGM, that would give you plenty of cranking amps without pulling down the battery voltage.

Optimas are a waste of space, and aren't nearly as good as they used to be. There are much better batteries now.

I’m running an 8274 the upgraded Roxor alternator and an O’Reilly 34/78 super start agm battery. Works great thus far.

If your winch is rated 8k-10k lbs and your vehicle still has the stock battery, it’s possible that the stock battery might not be enough, especially if you plan to use the winch frequently or for extended periods. In that case, it’s a good idea to upgrade your battery to a high-amp AGM or deep cycle battery, as these can provide the extra current the winch needs.
Some people also use a dual battery system so the stock battery doesn’t get overloaded while running the winch. For starting a winch, a high CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) battery is ideal, particularly in colder weather. Examples of reliable AGM batteries for winches include the Optima RedTop and Odyssey PC680/PC925 (Amazon.com: OPTIMA Batteries RedTop Starting Batteries Bundle - 6V and 12V | 800 Cold Cranking Amps : Electronics)
