I installed a test plate to block off the EGR valve. Hit the gasket with acetone to clean it and left valve plugged in. No check engine light has come on after several cold starts and several runs around town. It seems some people have luck without the CEL illuminating. Just thought I’d share success story.

The hole in these plates threading isn’t great though. Really had to crank down to force the plug in after it got about halfway into the plates threading. I assume that this is sealed?

Those are pipe plugs and thus, NPT threads. They aren't intended to be threaded in until flush, and they seal with a tapered thread cut. The plates aren't too thick, so you may want to keep an eye on them to be sure you didn't over tighten the the point of compromising the sealing ability.
