The internet is full of lovers and haters of rubberized undercoating. The basic idea is to spray the undercarriage parts with black junk to help reduce rocks and debris from damaging the other coatings and cause rust etc. It's like spray paint, but made from asphalt. I used 6 cans to spray all 4 wheel wells. I chose 3M part # 03584. You jack it up as high as you can, remove the wheels, use masking tape and drapes to cover the entire vehicle, then start spraying! Use goggles, because this stuff seriously burns when it gets in your eyes! Because it's asphalt, overspray is relatively easy to wipe up, but good drapes are still superior. Even with amateur application, I haven't seen any imperfections. Half of my motivation was to protect the wheel wells, and the other half was to make them black. If you just want them black, then paint it traditionally, even a brush will work. Either way, the quality of your product depends more on thorough surface preparation than anything else. Make sure you clean it thoroughly. I used degreaser and an air gun to blow-dry the pockets. I didn't rough the surface for rubberized undercoating, but for paint you probably should etch it or something.

Cost: $50 for 6 cans, $40 for masking tape and drapes. It took about 20 hours start-to-finish, but I'm very slow and careful. Make sure you mask all the bolts and nuts, because unlike paint this junk is very difficult to remove if you ever need to loosen those bolts again.

I haven't seen anyone else crazy enough to spend this much time on their wheel wells. If you're curious what it looks like, maybe my post can save you some time and imagination.

I undercoated the wheel wells as soon as I brought it home. We’ve had no shortage of salt on our roads and it just gives it a way better look. I just taped real good on the bottom face of the lip with some real wide tape so it stuck out like a fender flare. Mask on the inside between the frame and body with some newspaper and let her rip.
